Legal Requirements for Employing Staff in Macedonia
Employing staff in Macedonia comes with clear, structured requirements — and we handle them for you. Here’s what’s important:
Employment Contracts
All employees must have a written employment contract that clearly sets out their role, responsibilities, working hours, salary, and other terms. Contracts can be indefinite or fixed-term.
Probation Periods
A probation period of up to 4 months is allowed and can be included in the employment contract. During this period, termination procedures are more flexible.
Working Hours and Overtime
The standard working week is 40 hours, with a legal maximum of 48 hours including overtime. Overtime is allowed but requires additional compensation.
Leave Entitlements
Employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 days of paid annual leave. Additional entitlements include sick leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave, all governed by specific regulations.
Minimum Wage
Macedonia has a nationally mandated minimum wage that all employers must comply with. This rate is subject to regular review and adjustment.
Social Security Contributions
Employers must pay contributions covering pension, health insurance, and unemployment insurance. These are calculated as a percentage of gross salary and remitted to Macedonian authorities monthly.
