Legal Requirements for Employing Staff in Macedonia

Employing staff in Macedonia comes with clear, structured requirements — and we handle them for you. Here’s what’s important:

Employment Contracts

All employees must have a written employment contract that clearly sets out their role, responsibilities, working hours, salary, and other terms. Contracts can be indefinite or fixed-term.

Probation Periods

A probation period of up to 4 months is allowed and can be included in the employment contract. During this period, termination procedures are more flexible.

Working Hours and Overtime

The standard working week is 40 hours, with a legal maximum of 48 hours including overtime. Overtime is allowed but requires additional compensation.

Leave Entitlements

Employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 days of paid annual leave. Additional entitlements include sick leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave, all governed by specific regulations.

Minimum Wage

Macedonia has a nationally mandated minimum wage that all employers must comply with. This rate is subject to regular review and adjustment.

Social Security Contributions

Employers must pay contributions covering pension, health insurance, and unemployment insurance. These are calculated as a percentage of gross salary and remitted to Macedonian authorities monthly.

We operate a fair but firm HR policy. After probation, we apply a three-strike policy for disciplinary matters. If you feel someone isn’t right for your business, we can act faster where needed.

Do you lock clients into long-term contracts?

No. We work on 30-day terms. Our contract is performance-based — you keep us on while we perform. This flexibility ensures both staff and our team stay focused on delivering results.

How does Connect manage IT security and data protection?

We align with your existing IT policies. We can apply restrictions like disabling USBs and printers, controlling website access, and enforcing secure configurations. Devices are wiped when needed. Since most work is cloud-based, the device itself is just an endpoint. We also maintain backup internet providers for continuity.

What about IP protection? How do you prevent staff taking information?

The risk of IP loss often exists at a higher level onshore. We recruit carefully, pay competitively, and create a stable environment — when staff are happy, there’s little incentive for them to leave or misuse information. We also implement strict data loss prevention systems, including controls that stop sensitive information from being emailed externally. The reality is that most data breaches are accidental, and we work to minimize this risk.
