About the Role
The Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing financial aspects of assigned projects from inception through completion. This role ensures accurate and timely reporting of project financials, including budgeting, cost tracking, billing, revenue recognition, and compliance. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with project managers, operations, and finance teams to maintain financial control and support decision-making.
What You’ll Be Doing
Project Financial Management
- Monitor and track project budgets, actual costs, and forecasts.
- Review and approve project-related invoices and expenses.
- Maintain project cost ledgers and ensure accurate cost coding.
- Prepare monthly project financial reports, including variance analysis.
Billing and Revenue Recognition
- Generate client invoices in accordance with contract terms.
- Ensure timely and accurate revenue recognition based on project milestones, % completion, or deliverables.
- Work with the finance team to ensure correct journal entries and accruals.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Assist project managers with budget development and revisions.
- Provide regular financial updates and forecasts throughout the project lifecycle.
- Track and report on committed costs and remaining budgets.
Compliance and Audit
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, policies, and GAAP standards.
- Support audits by providing necessary documentation and analysis.
- Maintain organized records of all project financial documentation.
Collaboration and Communication
- Partner with project managers to understand project scope and financial implications.
- Attend project meetings to provide financial insights and updates.
- Serve as a liaison between operations and accounting to align financial reporting with project execution.
What You Should Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a project-based environment
- Strong understanding of revenue recognition principles (e.g., % complete, milestone-based)
- Proficiency with accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., Deltek, Sage, NetSuite, QuickBooks)
- Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with complex spreadsheets and models
- Excellent analytical and organisational skills
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Bonus If You Have
- Experience with WIP (Work in Progress) reporting and job costing
- Familiarity with project management tools and platforms
- Industry experience in construction, engineering, architecture, or renewable energy
